Synopsis The story begins with a poet named Charles Snell who has had enough of the "rat race". He decides to reject the world and make his home in a department store, and write his poetry there at night.(If You Can Find Me I'm Here). He shortly finds out that a secret community of people reside there headed by one Mrs. Monday. She will let him stay if she is satisfied that he really is a poet. He is warned that if he stays there he can never leave.

Soon, Charles meets Ella Hawkins(Mrs. Mondays maid and the youngest occupant.) She has lived there since she was 6, when one day Mrs. Monday found her asleep in the Woman's Hats section; she had gotten separated from her mother and Mrs. Monday took her to keep as a maid. They are immediately attracted to each other. Ella tells Charles about the Dark Men (another secret community) that live in a mortuary. If someone tries to escape Mrs.Monday summons them and when they're done there's a new mannequin in the store.

Charles pities Ella but she tells him not to pity her, she has her memories (I Remember). Charles decides that he will teach her to read and write.

One night during one of Mrs. Monday's bridge games while Ella is serving tea and sandwiches, they sing their private thoughts to each other (When).

As their love grows Ella finally tells Charles that she wants to run away with him. (Take Me To The World). Unfortunately, their plans are overheard throughout the store on the loud speaker system. Mrs.Monday calls the Dark Men as Ella and Charles try to escape.

The final scene of the show is an outside shot of a new display in the store window; a pair of bride and groom mannequins.
