Sunday,
By the blue,
Purple yellow red water
On the Green
Purple yellow red grass,
As we pass
Through arrangements of shadows
Towards the verticals of trees
Forever by the blue Purple
Yellow red water
On the green
Orange violet mass
Of the grass
In our perfect park
Made of flecks of light and dark and parasols..."

"Suerat's palate had eleven colors plus white, and he would only mix adjacent colors. At first I thought I'd assign one note of the twelve-note scale to each color and place then in same way, but then I realized that the entire score would have consisted of minor seconds--an unnourishing prospect."

-Stephen Sondheim

This Pulitzer prize winning show celebrates French neo-impressionist painter George Seurat's masterpiece " A Sunday Afternoon On The Island of La Grande Jatte". In the painting Seurat perfected the technique known as pointilism in which small dots of pure color are mixed by the eye of the viewer. When seen from a distance they blend to reveal dazzling hues and lights. Through the use of staccato Sondheim creates a form of musical pointilism. Although suggested by the painter's life and work, the story and its characters are fictitous. Sondheim in collaboration with James Lapine began work on the show in 1982 and, it was presented by Playwrights Horizons in July of 1982.

Sunday opened at the Booth Theatre on May 2, 1984 and ran for 604 performances .It Closed October 13, 1985 .Produced by the Shubert Organization and Emanuel Azenberg by arrangement with Playwrights Horizons, Directed by James Lapine, Scenery by Tony Straiges, Costumes by Patricia Zipprodt and Ann Hould-Ward, Lighting by Richard Nelson, Special Effects by Bran Ferren, Sound by Tom Morse ,Hair and Makeup by Lo Presto/Allen, Movement by Randolyn Zinn, Music Published by Tommy Valando,Musical Direction by Paul Gemignani and Orchestrations by Michael Starobin.
